‘World’s First’ 8K Monitor From Dell is On Sale Now – Priced at $5K

Many in the computing world have not even started using 4k monitors, yet Dell's new 8k monitor is now available for purchase, for a measly $5,000.

8k. Let that sink in a little bit. That is a 33.2MP monitor. I could almost view one of the RAW files from my Sony A7RII in full screen on this thing. Do you know what 8k would look like? Check out the image below.

monitor resolution difference

An 8k monitor would effectively hold 4 – 4k displays at a full resolution of 7680×4320 pixels. That is a huge resolution.

This monitor, the UP3218K was announced back in January at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES). Since its unveiling as the world's first 8k monitor, it has taken the professional video and photography world by storm.

Clearly from the price tag it is not a monitor for everyone. At $5,000 for a single monitor, this is likely only going to see the inside of studios and home studios where professional editors will be using the monitor. the monitor certainly lives up to the expectations with the specifications. The monitor has a 31.5 inch IPS panel, at 280 pixels per inch.

Here is what your images will look like on this monitor:

Dell UP3218k Monitor Image Comparison

The detail of the image on the 8K monitor is obscene in how sharp and clear it is.

So other than the price, what is the downside to this monitor? Well, to send the data required to produce images on this monitor you'll need two DisplayPort 1.3 ports. A single cable can't send enough data to power this behemoth. Most professionals who edit for a living likely already have video cards that can handle this, but if you don't, you'll have to add that to the shopping list as well.

It will probably be a while before you know anyone who owns this monitor. Being a “world's first” it will probably take a while for the price to come down to the affordable level for most. But just think, in 2-3 years you could own this monitor.
